MCP Integration Guide

Goal: Connect any MCP-compatible AI to your governed data.

What is MCP?

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard for connecting AI applications to data sources. It lets AI assistants:

  • Query data through defined interfaces
  • Respect access controls
  • Produce auditable interactions

OpenIndustrial exposes your warm queries as MCP tools, so any compatible AI can use them.

Why This Matters

Without MCPWith OpenIndustrial MCP
AI has no data accessAI queries your real data
Custom integrations per AIStandard protocol, any AI
No governanceEvery query audited
Hallucinated answersGrounded in your data

This is the "aha moment": your warm queries become AI-accessible tools. Claude, Copilot, custom agents—all query the same governed data layer.

How It Works

AI Client (Claude, Copilot, etc.)
        ↓ MCP Protocol
OpenIndustrial MCP Server
        ↓ Governed Layer
Your Warm Queries
        ↓ Audit + Access Control
Your Data
  1. AI client connects to your MCP server
  2. Server exposes warm queries as tools
  3. AI calls tools with parameters
  4. Queries run through governance layer
  5. Results return to AI
  6. Every interaction logged

Your MCP Endpoint

Each workspace has a unique MCP endpoint:

https://mcp.openindustrial.co/{workspace-id}

Find it in:

  • API → MCP tab
  • Or ask Azi: "What's my MCP endpoint?"

Authentication

MCP connections require:

  • API key or JWT token
  • Appropriate scopes (at minimum: read:queries, execute:queries)
Thinking Tip:

Use scoped tokens for MCP. Don't give AI clients admin access.

Available Tools

Every published warm query becomes an MCP tool:

Warm QueryMCP Tool Name
temperature-avgquery_temperature_avg
device-statusquery_device_status
production-metricsquery_production_metrics

Parameters defined in your query become tool parameters.

Governance in MCP

Every MCP interaction is governed:

  • Authentication: Who is the AI client?
  • Authorization: What queries can it access?
  • Audit: Every call logged
  • Rate limiting: Prevent abuse
