Claude Desktop Integration
Goal: Connect Claude Desktop to your governed industrial data.
Prerequisites
- Claude Desktop installed (macOS or Windows)
- OpenIndustrial workspace with at least one warm query
- API key with
read:queriesandexecute:queriesscopes
Step 1: Get Your MCP Configuration
In OpenIndustrial:
- Go to API → MCP
- Click Generate Config
- Copy the configuration JSON
Or ask Azi: "Generate MCP config for Claude Desktop"
Step 2: Configure Claude Desktop
macOS
- Open
~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json - Add your MCP server to the
mcpServerssection:
{
"mcpServers": {
"open-industrial": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"@openindustrial/mcp-server",
"--workspace", "YOUR_WORKSPACE_ID",
"--token", "YOUR_API_TOKEN"
]
}
}
}
Windows
- Open
%APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json - Add the same configuration as above
Step 3: Restart Claude Desktop
- Quit Claude Desktop completely
- Reopen it
- Look for the hammer icon (tools) in the chat interface
- Your warm queries should appear as available tools
Step 4: Start Querying
Ask Claude questions about your data:
"What was the average temperature in the brewery last hour?"
Claude will:
- See your
temperature-avgquery as a tool - Call it with appropriate parameters
- Return results in natural language
Claude can combine multiple queries in one response. Ask complex questions that span multiple data points.
Example Interactions
Simple Query
You: "What's the current status of all devices?"
Claude: Calls query_device_status tool
"Based on the data, you have 12 devices online: 8 temperature sensors, 3 pressure monitors, and 1 flow meter. All are reporting normally except sensor T-07 which shows elevated readings."
Analysis Query
You: "Compare this week's production to last week."
Claude: Calls query_production_metrics with date ranges
"Production is up 8% this week (2,340 units vs 2,165 last week). The increase is primarily from Line 2, which had 15% less downtime."
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| Tools not appearing | Restart Claude Desktop, check config syntax |
| Connection errors | Verify API token hasn't expired |
| Permission denied | Check token has required scopes |
| Slow responses | Normal for first query; subsequent queries faster |
Security Considerations
Your API token is stored in a local config file. Treat it like any credential: don't share it, rotate it periodically.
- Use a dedicated token for Claude Desktop
- Set appropriate expiry (90 days recommended)
- Limit scopes to only what's needed
- Monitor usage in audit logs
Audit Trail
Every query Claude makes is logged:
{
"client": "claude-desktop",
"user": "mike@company.com",
"query": "temperature-avg",
"parameters": {"timeRange": "1h"},
"timestamp": "2026-01-18T10:30:00Z"
}
